Why Recruitment Shouldn't Be About Perfect CVs

By Emma Grace, Founder, The Talent Division

Welcome to The Talent Division Insights, practical recruitment advice from Emma Grace, Founder of The Talent Division.  Drawing on nearly 30 years in recruitment, each Insight shares honest observations and practical guidance to help businesses attract, hire and retain exceptional people.

It's easy to become fixated on finding the "perfect CV."

The perfectly formatted document.

The flawless career history.

The candidate who appears to tick every single box.

But after nearly 30 years in recruitment, I've learnt that great hiring isn't about finding perfect CVs.

It's about finding the right people.

A CV only tells part of the story

A CV gives you facts.

Where someone has worked.

What they've achieved.

Their qualifications and experience.

What it can't tell you is how someone communicates, how they solve problems, how they'll fit into your team or what motivates them.

Those are often the things that determine whether someone will truly succeed.

We don't rewrite candidates' stories

At The Talent Division, we don't alter or rewrite candidates' CVs.

We believe a CV should remain exactly that, the candidate's own story, in their own words.

Of course, we provide additional information to help our clients make informed decisions, including interview notes, salary expectations, notice periods and our reasons for recommending someone.

But the CV itself belongs to the candidate.

Recruitment is about interpretation

One of the biggest values a recruiter can add isn't changing a CV.

It's understanding the person behind it.

Sometimes a hiring manager might overlook a candidate because their experience isn't an exact match.

A recruiter can often recognise transferable skills, potential and strengths that aren't immediately obvious on paper.

That's where experience really matters.

Don't let formatting influence your decisions

It's easy to be impressed by beautifully designed CVs.

It's equally easy to overlook someone whose document isn't quite as polished.

Neither necessarily reflects how capable someone is.

The strongest hiring decisions are rarely made because of formatting.

They're made because employers look beyond the document and focus on the individual.

Great recruitment is about people

The best recruiters don't simply forward CVs.

They spend time getting to know candidates.

They understand motivations, ambitions, personality and potential.

That understanding gives clients confidence that they're meeting people who have been carefully selected for more than just what's written on a page.

Emma's Thought

"Some of the very best candidates I've ever placed didn't have the most polished CVs. What made them exceptional wasn't the document, it was the person behind it. Recruitment has always been about people, not paperwork."
