You Don't Have to Tick Every Box to Apply for a Job
By Emma Grace, Founder, The Talent Division
Welcome to Talent Division Insights, practical career advice and recruitment insight from Emma Grace, Founder of The Talent Division. Drawing on nearly 30 years in recruitment, these Insights are designed to help candidates navigate every stage of the job search with confidence.
One conversation I've had countless times over the years starts with the same sentence.
"I'd love that job... but I don't think I'm qualified enough."
Sometimes the candidate doesn't have one of the qualifications listed.
Sometimes they've never worked in that particular industry.
Sometimes they're simply lacking confidence.
My answer is often the same.
Apply anyway.
Job descriptions aren't shopping lists
Many people read a job description as though every single requirement is non-negotiable.
In reality, employers are often describing their ideal candidate.
That doesn't mean they'll only consider someone who ticks every single box.
The skills and experience you already have may be far more transferable than you realise.
Employers hire people, not paperwork
Qualifications and experience matter.
But they're only part of the picture.
Attitude.
Curiosity.
Reliability.
Communication.
The ability to learn.
These are qualities that can't always be taught, and many employers value them just as highly as technical experience.
I've seen candidates secure fantastic opportunities because they demonstrated potential, enthusiasm and a genuine desire to grow.
Don't reject yourself
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is deciding they won't be successful before anyone else has had the chance to make that decision.
If the role genuinely excites you and you can demonstrate many of the skills required, don't let self-doubt stop you.
The worst outcome is that you don't get the job.
The best outcome?
It could completely change your career.
Your experience is more valuable than you think
You might not have worked in exactly the same industry.
You may not have held the exact job title.
But you've almost certainly solved problems, worked with customers, managed priorities or developed skills that transfer into other roles.
Don't underestimate what you already bring to the table.
Let someone else see your potential
One of the reasons people work with recruiters is because we often recognise strengths that candidates don't always see in themselves.
We look beyond job titles.
We look at people.
Sometimes all you need is someone who believes you're capable of taking that next step.
Emma's Thought
"Some of the happiest candidates I've placed almost didn't apply because they believed they weren't quite good enough. Never underestimate what you can achieve when someone sees your potential before you do."
